One of my favorite things about new technology is that there is often great things that come out of it's development. Stage lighting has been used for years to set the mood at concerts and other performances, it was a natural transition when it worked it's way into smaller events like weddings. Previous equipment used powerful (and energy hungry) bulbs that produced lots of heat. The old style lighting was white light and had to have a colored film called a gel added in order to change the color. New equipment has both lowered the operating cost, heat and weight by using LEDs. The added benefit is they can change color electronically, even being programed to shift color through out. Now you can change the mood of the event with the flip of a switch.

Wow! What a fun and fanciful day at the US Grant's 2010 Wedding Showcase! As always, the show was a spectacular display of many, many talents. Kool Party Rentals and Embellishmint Floral Design really brought their A-game and helped me to shine! Here are some photos of our table design. I warned you it was gonna be FUNKY! I definitely think we captured playful & sexy. We heard the design described in many colorful ways today: "like a tub of sherbet", "alice in wonderland meets your grandma's candy bowl", "a pretty version of Bettlejuice", and my favorite "Liberachi on cartoon steroids"! Uh... yeah, that about says it all and we like it that way! That's how we roll! Haha!

Oh yeah, and by the way, a big shout out to that cool photographer I know, Sean of Resolusean Photography ;-) Some of you might already know, but I kinda have a crush on him!

Yay! The US Grant's annual Wedding Showcase is finally here! This is truly one of the most beautiful bridal shows of the year and Resolusean is delighted to have a part in such a wonderful production!

The show is from 12pm to 4pm, tomorrow, Sunday, April 11. Stop by and say hi! We can wait to show off our fun and playful table-top design! It's kinda funky, but so are we! (Yea, I said it!)

Care for your DSLR Camera

So you finally got that fancy new digital SLR camera (the one that lets you change lenses), and now you have spots on all your photos. Usually you will notice the spots showing up against solid colors like the blue sky. These are typically the result of a dirty sensor. To avoid cleaning more than necessary there are a few practices that can help reduce the issue.

1. Always store your camera with a lens or body cap in place.

2. Minimize the time a lens or cap in removed during a lens change.

3. Always change a lens with the camera pointing down to minimize the dust that lands in the opening.

4. Lenses or caps should be clean before attaching to the camera.

5. Avoid changing lenses in a dusty or a dirty location (i.e. the beach), and if you must change a lens in an undesirable location look for cover like the trunk of your car or behind a wind block.

Once you have dirt on the sensor it must be cleaned. Many newer camera have a self cleaning function that can work very well. If the camera is very dirty you may need to run the action several times. If there is no self cleaning option or it is too dirty for self clean, the next step is to try air (never use canned or compressed air unless you have special training). My favorite tool is the Rocket. Holding the camera pointed down, insert the tip towards the opening (making sure to not poke inside the camera) and squeeze a burst of air into the camera body. Repeat several times then test for dirt. If you don't have a sensor scope, take a photo of the sky or other solid light colored area and inspect the image for dirt (for best results use an F16 or F22 aperture if possible). You may need to repeat several times to get the sensor clean. For stubborn dirt the next level is a dry cleaning with a static brush. Although the sensor has a piece of glass that covers it and you are not likely to do any lasting damage to it you should be aware that if this procedure goes badly you will be taking your camera to the shop for a professional cleaning. If the camera has never been professionally cleaned there is a near 100% chance that there is stray adhesive or lubrication around the edge of the sensor, if you touch this area when cleaning you will drag that product onto the sensor making it worse then when you started. If the dry cleaning fails the final option is for a wet (chemical cleaning) and although there are kits available I recommend having this type of cleaning done. There are specific hand skills needed as well as requiring lighted magnification to see what you are doing. Most camera shops offer this service for $50-$75 and it usually takes a day or so. Best advise is to avoid letting dust in, look for dust on your images and clean when you notice it. Letting dirt build up before attempting to clean causes the problem to be much worse.

Big Year for the Croff kids

Join me as I welcome the new year and the great wedding trends that are coming our way. At the top of my favorites list for this year is the return to nostalgia and beauty for the wedding scene.

In 2010, we will be celebrating fabulous style, not only for our brides, but for our handsome grooms, as well! This is an exciting year as men return to the sharp and dapper suits of the past. Think Cary Grant, Dean Martin, or Frank Sinatra, and think of how great they will look!

Likewise, the brides of 2010 are simply beautiful, wearing dresses that take note of classic Hollywood glamour. A popular accent to these dresses will be the "bird cage veil"- those gorgeous little vintage blushers made of open netting that just cover the top half of the face, usually adorned with a feathered or jeweled headpiece. I think they make every girl feel like a classic movie star!

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus (he is in Del Mar). This has to be the most authentic Santa I have run across. On a holiday assignment for the Del Mar Village Association I had the opportunity to work with this awesome Saint Nick, and not sure if it was real or an augmentation but his belly did shake like a bowl of jelly he he laughed. Also shown here is Santa helper elf... less pointy ears than I would have expected but cute all the same.

Adrianne & Morgan married at the Abby in San Diego. I loved how much they were into each other, how unique and personal the wedding was and how involved the family was in making everything just perfect for the special day. The entire group put in weeks of work, from the lighting down to the hand crafted castle for the desert. You will note the "Mr T" bobble head that has been part of every family gathering for longer than anyone could tell me. It is rumored that "Mr T" has been to every continent (and there are photos to prove it). All of these things made the day unique but one of my favorite things was Adrianne's shoes or "Choo's" (since they were Jimmy Choo designed), gotta love the red :)

I find that I get asked this question at least once a week "what is the best camera" or "what camera should I buy" and since we are going to be sneaking into the holiday season soon, I thought I would just answer it for everyone. The best camera for you is (drum roll)..... dependent on your need. I know, that wasn't the answer you wanted to hear so lets talk through some points:

1. I subscribe to the "best camera is the one you have with you" school of thought. In short, you can have the most megapixel, whistle and bell featured DSLR but if it is in the closet when your child takes his first step then it is worthless. So choose a camera you will carry or have ready. Most pro photographers have one or two old cameras that they have retired from day-to-day service that live in their vehicle as the "car camera". You can be assured the best sunset ever will happen when you're stuck in traffic and have no camera.

2. Camera style - point and shoot vs. DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex). Typically a point and shoot has an attached fixed lens and although that lens usually zooms it cannot be changed at your whim. The DSLR (or SLR for film) is typically defined by a changeable lens system (the view is directed through the lens via a series of mirrors that flip up during the exposure). A point and shoot usually takes the points for lower cost, ease of use and compact size. The DSLR excels in lens options (wide angle, zoom, telephoto, macro and other special applications), manual control, speed and many times quality of image. The nature of a DSLR and its expandability is both a pro and a con. Pro because you can add to a base system and create new options; con because those additions are costly and can quickly turn something that you would carry on a strap over your shoulder into a full backpack worth of equipment.

3. Once you decide what style of camera is right for you there are a myriad of brands and models to choose from. One thing is true, nearly every new camera is better that what was available even 5 years ago. One trend that has surpassed the need for most people is the race for megapixels. We have this "more is better" mentality that just isn't true. Nearly all users will find a 10 megapixel camera is more than sufficient. More important that the megapixels is the ability to photograph at high ISO, this allows the camera to function better in low light.

Once you're ready to buy, check out your local camera shop. You may pay a few dollars more but it is good to have someone you can go to for advice and tips. Often they will have classes to help you start using your new equipment.

There are all kinds of small coincidences that pop up in a wedding, Brides with the same first name as their new mother-in-law. Sometimes it will be a larger coincidence like first and middle names the same and then there is Emily & Michael they had the good chance of sharing their parents wedding date... not just with the brides parents but the grooms parents as well.

It is a unique thing that the date fell on a summer saturday to boot. I have no idea what the odds are but you would probably be more likely to win the lotto or get struck by lightning.

The digital revolution in photography has created a double-edged sword. On one hand, we have the freedom to photograph any whim that we find interesting, with the idea that "if I don't like it I can delete it". Most people don't realize the task they are asking those devices to preform. When you delete a photo in the camera, you are basically removing a chunk of data from the memory card. When the next photo comes along to fill that spot it many be a larger or smaller file... if it is larger, the file will be chopped up and the memory becomes fragmented. This is a problem for your desktop computer, imagine the strain you add to the processor that is working in that camera. Think of a row of small cars parked in a line bumper to bumper. Take one of those cars out of the middle and try to fit in a '72 Cadillac... yep you are going to have to unbolt the front end and engine to be able to make it fit. Now take all those left over parts and scatter them down the row till they are tucked in nice and neat, everything is fine till you need to drive it home. I know it seems like the camera should be able to handle it, and it does until it doesn't and then the best you can hope for is some luck and a really good recovery program. It is best to think about your digital media like you did film, once you click the shutter that image is set in line until it is developed (loaded into your computer).

Tips for giving your data the best chance for survival:

1. Never delete photos in camera (load on to your computer to edit).

2. Load images on to your computer and back up files before returning the card to service.

3. When the images have been loaded and backed up, format the card in your camera.

4. When handling cards, be sure to avoid touching the contacts.

5. Store cards in a case when not in the camera.

6. Lastly, print your images. It may not seem like it but digital images can disappear in a blink of an eye. Computers crash every day and given enough time you will suffer from a failure in equipment.

Composition is everything in a photograph, (well that and contrast, story, color, exposure and a few other minor things). Ok so there is a few things that make up a good photograph but for this entry we are going to talk about composition... where do things sit in the image? what makes for an interesting composition. To understand what we find visually interesting (or what we will look at) we need to understand a bit about how our minds work. By design we like to identify, sort, classify and label things. We do it every waking minute and probably a fair amount during sleep. This is a very useful process to establish if something is dangerous for example. A down side of this function is that we humans tend to dismiss the known without much consideration. For example if you saw an apple every day and had never seen a pineapple, which would you look at longer if presented with both items? Because we are tuned to look for things that "stick out" or are different, we are quicker to dismiss those items that are symmetrical as being correct or safe. Items that are random, off-balance or asymmetrical cause us to look and think about them longer. This is the first challenge of a visual: how do I capture my viewer long enough that they realize there is something worth looking at? Most hobby photographers have a tendency to place the subject in the center of the frame (because that is where the auto focus spot is) but often times that is not the best place for the subject. If there is action or direction in the image (think of a boy running from left to right of your view) it is nearly always better to place the subject to the side of center. In our running example if the boy were placed on the left edge of the photo he has space to run into, if he is on the right we create tension because he is running into the edge quickly. That tension may be part of your story if he is being chased by something. If his pursuer is something harmful like a tiger this tension can be very stressful for the viewer, if it is something innocent like a bunny the tension adds comedy. In the following example you will note the couple is not placed in the center.

In this photo "Married on the midway" we used the leading line of the railing to lead the eye into the scene. The vertical lines of the carousel stop the eye from running out of the image with the railing. We achieve additional focus on the couple from the horse that is looking in their direction. The dark area on the right helps to pull the eye back into the scene. We visually wander down the boardwalk to see what is going on but the soft focus tells the mind "nothing here to see, move along".

That same image cropped with the couple in the center is still nice but would hold the viewers attention for less than half the time.

Saturday night at the Hotel Del Coronado I was on site to capture the WamPler Kids annual auction and dinner. This was my first time with this group of passionate supporters. Their mission is to send physically and economically disadvantaged kids to summer camp, the founder Steve is the driving force behind the group. Having been born with a severe case of Cerebral Palsy, Steve had great experiences from camp. The rugged outdoors, sleeping under the stars, fishing and the time around the bonfire are all great memories that he hopes to be able to share with new generations of campers. One of the things he took from the the time in the wilderness was the sense he could do anything he set out to do.

This event was unlike many of the other non profit galas I support, first off everyone was in camp attire not black tie formals. The other thing I noticed was a well decorated but not expensive decorations, it really was evident that the goal was to raise money to support the kids not to have huge parties. Everyone had a great time and the closeness of the group was evident.

Look Great in Photos Tip #2

Fine tuning to look your best.

Last month we covered some basics (refresher if you missed it), this month we are going to fine tune the pose for the ladies.

This pose shows a common stance people default to when forced to have their photo taken... our model is facing the camera straight on with shoulders squared up to the camera, although she is a very fit person the camera adds 10-15 lbs.

With a slight turn of the body the overall mass is reduced dramatically. Additionally she has one leg forward and the knee is tucked in, this helps to bring out the curves of the figure.

The final step in the pose is to open up the arms slightly, this creates a space to see the waist and removes the additive effect the arms have when they are at the models side. If the you have something in your hands like a bouquet, raising it slightly will cause this effect naturally.

Impress with a New Fabulous Location

This month's party planning tip is all about impressing your friends. What is a better way to do just that than by showing off your party or event at a fabulous, undiscovered, new spot in town...

I recently discovered a true polished gem, right in the heart of downtown San Diego. Se' San Diego is a sexy and sophisticated new venue that I am so excited to know about! Their Sales Manager, Rigel Bitterman (pronounce "Rigel" like "Nigel") took me on an exclusive tour of the property and, I have to tell you, it left me astounded. Every detail of every space has been lusciously adorned with something special to see and touch - YES touch!. The property's decor is comprised of many art instillations of varying sizes - some are up to two stories tall - will leave your head spinning. Every nook and cranny has something special to take in. Even the interior of the elevator is spectacular! (Just a little secret about the elevators, when you walk in, you can't figure out why it suddenly smells so calming, but it is because the wood they use is from vanilla plants. Can you believe that? Plus, the way in which they chose to use the wood is totally gorgeous! Just like everything at Se' San Diego.)

Every part of this venue screams, "Throw a party! I'm so fun and fabulous. How can you resist?" from the restaurant, to the pool deck, to the private suites, to yes how can I forget, even the event rooms! I am so in love with this sexy space that I can't wait to tell all my friends and clients.

Finally, I would be remiss to not mention the customer service. To sum it up, Rigel said that Se' San Diego's philosophy about service is "The answer is yes. What is the request?" Ah! I'm in love. Just what every event planner and party-goer wants to hear.

Midnight at Crystal Pier

Just back from a midnight Safari to Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach... Brown Lori * and I ran across the guy with the cool spiked hair, he was just finishing his set at as the drummer of a punk band (I don't really remember the name, something with "nutts" spelled with two t's, that part I remeber)

*at one time two of the photographers that shoot with me were both named Lori, to avoid confusion nicknames evolved based on hair color. They came to embrace the reference of Red Lori and Brown Lori.

Mindy & Chad at Windandsea

First time in a long time there were no other photo sessions going on at the beach, we had the entire place to ourselves. Mindy and Chad were able to play in the surf without fear of other people being in the scene. There was a closed sign on the stairs but we took that for the stairs being closed not the beach... Maybe we were wrong :)

As the band War once said, "all my friends know the lowrider"... Valentines weekend I had the chance to meet several, in lieu of the traditional limo this stylish wedding couple payed tribute to some classic Chevrolet cars owned by family friends. The ceremony and reception were held at the Coronado Community Center. Thankfully the weather forecast was off by a day and we were rain free. A special thanks to officer Robert for being a good sport and impromptu model.

Does the internet = Karma

It seems that as technology moves forward and information about everything including things that were once private is now available with only a few key strokes. Some will say we are paying a high price for the loss of our privacy but on the other hand it is in some way instant internet Karma. Sure we have all had good and bad experiences with individuals and businesses.

The old marketing logic was that a dissatisfied customer would tell ten other people. Now a dissatisfied customer can reach an untold number instantly (while they are the most angry). The same is true for happy clients.

Recently Kate and I found a coupon for a nearby restaurant, the offer was good and it seemed like a place we would like, on our way to the location Kate pulled up the restaurant on Yelp.com (I was driving so it was safe surfing), we were shocked at the reviews and immediately changed our destination. Point is if you treat your clients with respect and approach things from a position of love and generosity the internet Karma will reward you with success. However, if your a mean bitter person internet Karma is going to move you quickly into your next professional life. What a great time to be alive and in business :)

Planning a party can be stressful, for many people. Here are some of the tricks that the experts use:

Enjoy Yourself-

Plan ahead well enough or hire the right professionals to make sure that you do not have to work at your own party. You will have a much better time if you are laughing and mingling versus working. Plus, it is YOU that everyone came to see, anyway! Plan ahead for this.

Let's Chat-

Remember to create seating areas that promote conversational flow for your guests. Make it easy for your guests to get to know one another simply because of where they are sitting. Lounge-style party rental furniture is great for this and it looks fabulous!

Looks Delicious-

When it comes to the food, presentation is key - even with the most basic fare. The experts create added visual interest at buffets and food stations by creating height. They do this by using a variety of box sizes that they insert on the table under the tablecloth or draping. This provides a different levels on which they can place their food trays. Also, they frequently stage the areas by adding in plant life and other non-traditional decor for a spark of interest.

All's Well-

Avoid sharing detail with your guests about the plans that did not work out. For the appearance of success, do not share those dirty details. Only you know what went wrong. Everyone else thinks you planned a flawless party. Let's keep it that way.

Look Great in Photos Tip #1

30 second diet plan

Most people when confronted by a camera resort to the same pose they have done for years (and it always looks bad). The trick to looking good is to first have an honest evaluation of your strong and weak attributes. Let's take a common one for this tip - love of carbs.

I, like many of you carry a bit extra due to my "over efficient" metabolism. Knowing this is your situation gives to the tools to look better in photographs. First thing is the outfit you choose, the human eye is drawn to flesh tones and bright objects. Since we notice things that are bright a large person will always look larger in light or white clothes, dark colors are slimming.

The other issue in exposed skin, if you carry a bit extra a sleeveless shirt can expose as much skin as is visible on the face (drawing the eye to the problem areas and away from the face). Now I am not advocating everyone dressing like Robert Smith from the Cure but clothing can have an impact on your look (especially if you know you are going to get photos taken). Another very easy way to reduce your camera size is to take advantage of the cameras lack of 3D perspective. Simply put, things that are closer to the lens appear larger so take a step back when in a group. Also, width can be shaved off with angle. As an example take a pencil (this represents your shoulders) hold the pencil at arms length point to the right, eraser to the left. Turn the pencil so the eraser is pointing at you. The pencil turns from a long object to a circle. The same is true with your body. If you stand in the middle of a group of three and place your arms around the two on either side, you are at your widest. You can cut nearly half your mass by turning to a 45 and tucking one shoulder behind the person next to you. "What about the person on the end" you ask... that is where you put the person that shows up late to the photo :)

ChileCo Social 02.09

The 2nd ChileCo Social of the year was a new twist in the culinary adventures we have grown to love. Chef Scotty took over the Catalina Offshore Seafood warehouse and turned it into Club Catalina, complete with house DJ "Shammy Dee" laid down a sublime mellow groove to complement the sustainable local dishes skillfully prepared by the ChileCo chefs. The next Social is March 22nd at the Museum of Contemporary Art downtown San Diego. I compete locally through out the year, state is the last step before Regional and National awards are given. The primary goal for print competition is to hone the numerous small details that separate a good image from a great image.

I am proud to say this image merited as well as taking best in class for Wedding Image. "Sisters in Plum"... it will be proceeding on to state competition next month, wish me luck.

A Simple Affair

In a time when many people are overworked and busy, few find time for the simpler things in life; things like taking in nature's beauty or enjoying a nursing meal around the table with friends.

Today, many of these basic pleasures are showing up in what use to be extravagant affairs, such as weddings. Suddenly, there is a great return to home, comfort, nature, earth, and friendship. Rather than seeing weddings that are jewel encrusted with lush high-end materials and imported flowers, where the hosts of the party are all but removed from their guests, we are beginning to see a trend for the simpler affair. Forward thinking couples are looking for options like small collections of feast tables scattered in a meadow, soft gauzy fabrics blowing in the wind, locally grown vegetables and succulents used as centerpieces - allowing the Bride & Groom to be mixed in amongst their guests as they laugh and clink their glasses to the setting sun.

While people's calendars and schedules stay as busy as ever, many are comforted to know that there is a way back; a way back to a simpler time and a simpler place - at least for one special day.

ChileCo Social 01.09

The Social is a four course dinner featuring local, organic and sustainable ingredients and the creative direction of Chef Scotty. Each month is a new unique venue, sometimes it will be a historic property, a field, vineyard, beach or some other beautiful or significant location. Look each month for new photos.

Matt, Shannon, Molly and the Challenger

A little over a year since their wedding, I met up with Matt and Shannon and the new additions to the family, Molly the Dog and Matt's 2nd love... a 2008 orange Dodge Challenger RT. It is clear that Shannon is sill first but Matt did get himself a jacket and a leash for Molly, both strangely matching the car (even though Molly isn't allowed in the car). I foresee many more orange items in their future... I just hope the excitement wears off before they have kids or we may see a son named Hemi or a daughter named Mopar :)

Bridal Bouquets that POP!

I just love when a Bride carries a bright beautiful bridal bouquet against her white wedding dress. So often Brides feel that they must have an all white bouquet and reserve all the color for her Bridesmaids. I say REVERSE that old idea. Let the colors of the flowers be nicely framed by the lovely white or ivory of your gown. The same goes for the Bridesmaids. Often they are wearing gorgeous vibrant or rich tones that would be a lovely backdrop to elegant cream or white flowers.

The Look of Love

When you work in the wedding industry, you have the benefit of seeing love in many different shapes and forms. You begin to form an appreciation and respect for how love may look and feel to others. Often, it is not love as you, personally, would select, but you learn that love is different for all people and that it is about drawing the one that comforts you closer.

One of my favorite things to witness in this business is the "look of love"; that is the look that couples share when they truly find comfort and security in one another. I frequently have the pleasure of seeing this in several of the couples I am working with now. Sometimes it is a look of total support from a Groom to his Bride as I ask about their preferences for their wedding details. Sometimes it is a Bride searching her Groom's eyes for an answer to a question that she can't quite answer on her own. Sometimes it is the glimpse of shared moments that they feel that only they are privy to. Above all, it is seeing in their eyes the partnership and commitment that brings them to the very subject of marriage and, in turn, gives me reason to be a part of this special time in their lives.

I am one of the lucky few, my job is filled with the "look of love" almost everyday. And I wonder, if when they meet with me, if they too, can see the "look of love" in me - love for a wonderful life and a wonderful career in which I have a sneak peak at the love they share. Lucky me.

Recently I was invited to photograph the Center for Community Solutions annual fundraiser.

This is a great cause to raise funds to help those suffering from domestic violence. The event had the best of our local culinary talent including Chef Scotty of ChileCo and Chef Paul McCabe from L'Auberge in Del Mar as well as Sam the Cooking Guy and many other wonderful chefs.

It's funny, there was an old skit on SNL with a New Englander that would make the statement "Cant get there from here"... seemed funny at the time but after trying to navigate our way around the state on Connecticut last week it seems all too true. Coming from California it was odd to be able to basically transverse the state in not much more than an hour (despite having to reevaluate our position several times) but it also took nearly an hour to travel the 28 or so miles to this covered bridge. Not due to traffic or any such slowdown just due to the terrain. Anyway, Erin and Ben were great sports even after a long wedding day, we were only able to play for about 45 minutes but I was quite happy with the results. While we were down on the rivers edge we noticed a couple sitting up on the bridge and we were pleasantly surprised to find they had ridden up on a red raked Harley... Kate worked her magic and in a few moments we were photographing bridal portraits on the bike. How many couples get to have this kind of fun on the wedding day, or for that matter convince their friends that they rode off on a Harley.

Two prints scored "Calm after the storm" (top) and "The mysterious properties of sand and the insignificance of man" (boy on the beach). The second image was also chosen to be printed in the book that represents the collection.

Tuesday brought a much needed break, as you would expect... on my day off I went to take photos. Fellow photographers Tom Phillips and Lisa Smith were up for the adventure so with 4x4's and cameras we went exploring. Our trip took us to an abandoned mine, natural rock caves and lastly to the Campo Railroad Museum. If you have the time and a 4x4, there are some wonderful areas around our county that beg to be explored. If you go, be sure to pack lots of water, sunscreen and CF cards...
